Fortune Cookies

Wednesday, June 29, 2005

My family has a tradition when it comes to opening fortune cookies. You can not open your own. You select which one is yours and then hand it to another person at the table to open and read aloud for you. Then you or another table member will reciprocate until all of them are read out loud. It makes reading the fortunes more fun. I even make my friends do that now when we eat out for Chinese. Of course you can always make it more interesting by adding "in bed" to the end of the fortune.

I hate when you get ones that are not fortunes but words of advice and caution, grr that isn't a fortune that is a mini lecture.

I seem to get a lot star and cloud sayings. I've always been a wish-upon-a-star type of kid growing up, and I still do, but it is rare that you can see the stars here in the city. I've probably wished on dozens of 737 commercial planes.

My recent fortune:
There appear to be many clouds; but they quickly pass.
Lucky Numbers 13, 17, 18, 19, 41, 43

Years ago I got one that said "The stars appear every night, all is well." I always loved that one, which is why I remember it to this day. I had it taped to my computer screen but it faded until you couldn't read the red ink anymore. I just taped the new fortune to my office computer though.

Does anyone else save them, the good ones? Look at all those people who won the lotto by playing their lucky numbers.

Answering machine woes, or why I suck at leaving messages

Friday, June 24, 2005

I hate people who take their time answering their cell phones. Not that I mind waiting, but because after 4 rings I think it's usually safe to say that they are not there or are not going to pick up. So I start planning a message in my head of what I'll say on their answering machine. Like a quick prepared speech like, "Hey there, it's Tara, sorry I missed you. I just want to say---" But then you get a real voice saying "Hello?" and there goes the message and any chance of a cool opening line or sounding breezy. Instead I'm startled and go, "Oh, hey, yeah it's Tara, you're there." It's terrible!

I practice phone messages in the first place for a reason. I'm a terrible message leaver, I either say way too much or make a joke. But it's a machine so the joke is just hanging there and so I fumble to make up for trying to leave a joke on a recording, so there are a lot of "ums" and "anyways."

Once when I was calling back a guy I had started seeing, my friends were actually holding their heads in pain. I freakin started talking about the weather on his answering machine. I was like, "yeah well I'm on my lunch hour, and it's real pretty out..." I then see my friends giving me the axe/cut-it signs and then I'm grabbing for more straws.

I also can't say "Call me back." I think it's rude and needy, so I say "talk to you later," thus implying I don't want a call back even if I do. Once I said "Call me back if you want to," which just sounds stupid. I mean, why wouldn't they want to ;) It's me! Haha, just kidding.

Conan Sighting

Monday, June 20, 2005

I just saw Conan O'Brien on Bleeker street around 8:00 tonight on my way home. He was walking with a hippy looking woman, and man is he tall! I don't know why I never realized it before, but he looked like a giant when he turned the corner and almost ran into me. I didn't say anything, played it cool, just kept walking. But I do love his late show..."for me to poop on!" ;)

Also I reached 7,500 hits just with Blog Explosion alone

Are you Team Aniston or Team Jolie?

Thursday, June 16, 2005

With the new Vanity Fair issue coming out where Aniston reportedly talks about Pitt's infidelity and Bradjolie heating up the screen in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, where do your loyalties lie? With Team Aniston or Team Jolie?

Personally I'm a big Jennifer Aniston fan so I'm going to be on her team no matter what. However, Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a really fun movie and I couldn't really fault the two beautiful actors for getting together.

I'd buy the shirt, but not for 30 bucks!!

Yankees Game

Wednesday, June 15, 2005

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us I'm headed to a Yankees game, and I love going to a night game, especially when it's after work. As the 4 train gets closer and closer to the stadium, it's mainly only people going to the game on board and there's this awesome sense of camaraderie. I also love seeing the business suits dwindle out and more jerseys and t-shirts fill the carts. On occasion I've seen several business guys take off their suits and ties and change into their Yankee apparel on the subway, while sneaking some sips from the beer cans stuck in their pockets. It's just so relaxing knowing you are not going to be doing work and going to a game. Where you'll pay way too much for drinks and a dog, but they will never taste as refreshing or delicious anywhere else.

It's funny with my baseball hat on, I look so much younger. At the gate, I usually get handed a free gift that they only give to those under 16, lol. Meanwhile, of course none of my friends are given one. I vary from being insulted to happy that I got something free stuff. I was pissed a couple of years ago when I was 21 and brought my 15 year old friend, whose like my younger brother and they wouldn't give him the t-shirt despite being the appropriate age, yet handed me one without a second glance. OUCH! I was like I drove him here! WTF?

I can't believe they are going to rebuild the stadium. It's the second oldest stadium and the house that Ruth built and the place where Dimagio and Mantle played at. It should be restored not rebuilt. Grr!

Update: Yanks win 6 to 1, Go Matsui! And Bill Clinton was at the game, he waved to everyone before the game started and then hung out in the owners box with Steinbrener.

Should I blog, or should I go?

Monday, June 13, 2005

Lately, more and more people that I know are reading my blog and I'm finding I have to censor myself a bit. I don't mean cursing, fuck that! ;) I mean I have to obviously watch who I talk about, not that I went around bad mouthing anyone before, but still I feel more confined now. It's not so much my friends, but the little acquaintances that know me and crushes.

What I never understood in Sex and the City was that none of Carrie's boyfriends or friends seemed to have read her column. Wouldn't you read your friends or girlfriends column? Just to see what they were saying about you or to get some advice? Why weren't some of her exes angry with her for sharing so much about their relationship?

Anyway on that note, the date the other day with Subway Guy went very well, despite my friends fears that I would get kidnapped, yada yada yada. It was an 8 hour date (mid afternoon to night) lots of walking around the city, 14th Street to Battery Park to the East Village. It was really nice being outside so much. I got blisters on my feet though, but it was a pretty great first date!

My obsession

Sunday, June 12, 2005

I'm so excited, I just can't hide it! Because two more great shows just came out on DVD and I definitely like it!

I swear I'm addicted to buying TV shows on DVD. Take a look at the list of the other shows that I own already:
West Wing (seasons 1-4)
Friends (seasons 1-8)
Alias (seasons 1-3)
Just Shoot Me (seasons 1&2)
Mary Tyler Moore (season 1)
Who's The Boss (season 1)
Taxi (seasons 1&2)
Mad About You (season 1)
Night Court (seasons 1&2)
Murphy Brown (season 2)
Sex and The City (seasons 1,2,3)
Designing Women (best of eps)
Golden Girls (season 1)
Family Guy (season 1&2)
Fraiser (season 1,2,3)

I do not want to think of how much that collection has cost me over the years or how many paychecks it equals. I just know that most of the box sets cost around $45 each. grr, damn my obssession! The sadder thing is that most have never even been opened, since I've seen all the episodes already.

The C Word

Friday, June 10, 2005

Like most women, I'm not a fan of the C word. I think we are programed to cringe when hearing it. Yet, women do use it when referring to other women. Is this liberating? I don't know, I just can't do it myself. Not that I don't curse like a sailor, but I still cannot bring myself to use that word in an argument.

I have a girlfriend that randomly uses the word 'twat' in conversation and it makes my eyes go wide, but it also makes me laugh. I guess it's all in how it's used.

I digress. Yesterday, I was walking with a friend on Bleeker Street in the West Village, not too far away from my apartment and this woman walking a little yappy dog rams right into me like she's a lineman from the Packers. My friend gasped and she wasn't even hit. Yet, this Paris Hilton wannabe looked at me like I was the rudest person for being in her way and walking in a straight line. She then calls me the C word in a British accent, which I think was fake. Despite having lived in London for 6 months, I didn't understand her.

I had thought she called me someone's name, like she thought she knew me or something. Not that anyone is really named Colt. So here I am thinking, or she has mistaken me from somebody named Colt and walked into me in confusion. In all sincerity, I respond "Did you say my name?" My friend gasps again and the woman huffs away, her dog squirming in front of her.

My friend who is now laughing goes, "Good come back!" Still clueless, I say "what?" My friend repeats that it was a good response to her calling me the C word. A sea of red filled my eyes and I freak out going, that *bleep* called ME a C---? I almost ran after her.

I calmed down a bit with some Tasty Delight (only 10 calories and it actually tastes good) but the nerve of her! Ramming into me and then calling a stranger that. Some people!

I'm Guest Blogging!

Wednesday, June 8, 2005

At ThoughtMechanics.com, the article is about the lack of male teachers in lower education and how women are more willing to settle for lower wages. To read the full post and to comment, go to: Show Them the Money !

The expression, "It's a man's world," can not be said for the teaching field, now that the number of male teachers is at a 40-year low.

National Education Association (NEA) research shows just 21 percent of the nations 3 million teachers are men.

NEA and MenTeach.org, write that the discrepancy stopping men from entering the profession is lower wages, poor insurance, societal pressure for men to be good providers, low social status, skepticism from the public, fear of being sued and acceptance from friends and family. (read more)

PS: I have a date coming up with the guy I met on the subway late Saturday. I know, I know, sounds sketch, lol.

Why do guys love Dave Matthews?

I've only met one guy my age who does not like him. I'm not saying women are not fans of his too, in fact a lot of my college girl friends were. They had posters in their room and all. I somehow managed to avoid seeing Dave every year when he played a mile down the road from Wheaton College in Mass. Even when my friends had an extra ticket, I still opted not to go. I just was not interested. I like music you can dance to, you can blame my Studio 54 going mother for that ;)

Last summer, I was meeting up with a guy that I was briefly seeing. I was my first time up at his neck of the woods, so I didn't know if we would be going to a restaurant for dinner, movies or yada yada yada. So opting for casual glam, I wore shorts that showed off my tanned long legs and paired them with tiny heels. To my silent horror, a friend surprised him with tickets two tickets to a Dave Matthews concert. I said they could go together and we could meet up another time, but that didn't work. I tried keeping an open mind tho. When I told him that I probably only knew two of his songs, we spent the ride to the Hartford Civic Center listening to Dave's albums.

The four-hour concert was spent with me teetering on heels in the drizzling weather out on the lawn, looking really really out of place, and him drumming on my shoulders (I had a bruise the next day). My dinner consisted of cheesy fries that I paid for, I also "loaned" him cash for a steak sandwich. Luckily I like greasy junk food. The music was not bad the first hour, but then I got really bored. I didn't even know any of the songs that the crowd kept cheering for.

During the never ending instrument solos, I tried to inhale the smoke that was being puffed nearby, hoping that would at least cheer me up. He caught me though, and asked why I was taking such deep breaths, lol. The conversation was minimal, actually there wasn't any since I was shushed whenever I tried to comment. So I stared blankly at the stage and endured the mean looks the women around me kept shooting me. They knew I didn't belong, lol.

I had called my friend who is a fan of his from the bathroom, the reception was not great but I heard, "Tara? At a Dave Matthews' Concert?" then lots of static laughter. Obviously she was no help.

Where he stands

Pope Benedict XVI on US Politics:
"A Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation of evil, and so unworthy to present himself for holy Communion, if he were to deliberately vote for a candidate precisely because of the candidate's permissive stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia." Memorandum to Cardinal Theodore E McCarrick, 2004.

hmm I guess I'm a Catholic guilty of cooperation of evil and have been receiving Holy Communion against the Pope's wishes. At least there will be a lot of women that I'll know in hell then.

Sweet Charity

Saturday, June 4, 2005

Yesterday, I went to see the musical "Sweet Charity" at the Al Hershfeild theater with my friend Farrah, who is visiting from New Orleans and Karen (this is her third time seeing it).

Despite the delays and problems surrounding this production, I have been really excited to see it since I heard "Sweet Charity" was coming to Broadway. I always liked the original Neil Simon film with Shirley McLaine. This time in the role of Charity is the talented Christina Applegate, who was adorable and did a great job playing the naive and hopeful dance hall hostess looking for love in the 60s. She was even nominated for Tony for her performance, although she did not win.

Songs include "Hey, Big Spender," "Rhythm of Life" and "If My Friend's Could See Me Now!"

The set was very colorful and had lots of nightlife lights and 1960s flair, but the wonderful choreographed dancing took center stage.

For me, the two hours really flew by and not once did I look at my watch. Instead, I was actually shocked when it was the final scene already.

PS: We saw Julia Stiles outside with this reddish haired guy, they looked like they were just friends tho. She was seated in the Orchestra rows too, so we saw her again during intermission. She was late getting back to her seat, so more people noticed her because of that. She was shorter than I expected, but looked very pretty with wavy shoulder length blonde hair.

PPS: Afterwards went to The Lobby for the first time and met up with 3 friends for sort of a mini high school reunion. One of them, Carolyn, I hadn't seen in four years. The place was fun and packed, we danced to Hip Hop and had a few drinks. I was tipsy going home on the subway and talked to a guy on the platform--one of the only times I wasn't eager to see the train come.

Fleetwood Mac

Thursday, June 2, 2005

I like Fleetwood Mac BUT thunder DOESN'T only happen when it's raining. However, players DO only love you when they are playing! ;) I can attest to both. I love the song but every time I hear it, I say out loud to my stereo, thunder can happen even when it's not raining. Just last weekend in fact.
