Why You Should Staycation at Sanibel Harbor

Nestled along the picturesque shores of Florida’s Gulf Coast, Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa offers a perfect escape for travelers seeking luxury, relaxation, and a touch of adventure. The 85-acre paradise features a world-class spa, water sports, four pools, fine dining and more.

If you're unfamiliar with the area, Sanibel is a barrier island near Fort Myers off the Southwest Florida Gulf Coast. Southern Living Magazine named Sanibel Island one of the best islands in Florida in 2023.

The island has a laid-back tropical, Caribbean feel that offers the family oasis of Martha's Vineyard and boasts stunning sunsets that drop off into the water. Beloved for its white-sand beaches and abundance of natural treasures and wildlife, it's no wonder Sanibel is a vacation haven for both locals and tourists alike.

Whether you're planning an unforgettable vacation or looking for a serene staycation, this destination has something for everyone. Here's why you should make Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa your next getaway spot.

A Stunning Waterfront Location

Perched on the edge of the Caloosahatchee River and just moments away from the iconic Sanibel and Captiva Islands, the resort boasts breathtaking views of shimmering waters, golden sunsets, and lush greenery. It's the perfect backdrop for creating lifelong memories.

Luxurious Accommodations

Sanibel Harbour Resort offers a variety of spacious rooms and suites designed with comfort and style in mind. Each space features modern amenities, plush bedding, and private balconies to soak in the stunning scenery.

Relaxation at the Sanibel Harbor Spa

Get pampered with a massage or beauty treatment at the luxury Sanibel Harbour Spa.

This freestanding spa offers 40,000 sq ft of pure bliss and 28 lavish treatment rooms. You can rejuvenate your body and mind in a serene and soothing environment with a wide range of options, including massages, facials, and body wraps.

Best of all, the spa is open to the public, which most Southwest Floridians do not know. Simply book a treatment and you can enjoy the beautiful spa facility, indoor pool, sauna, salon, steam rooms, couples lounge and large fitness center.

TIP: Take full advantage of the deals by checking their site often for the latest specials. Right now, the spa is offering the following Spa Add On Promotions at up to 70 percent off regular pricing, as well as a $50 BOGO guest pass.

Endless Activities and Amenities

From lounging by the pool to exploring the surrounding waters, there's no shortage of activities at the resort. Take a sunset cruise, kayaking, or unwind on the private beach. Fitness enthusiasts can enjoy state-of-the-art facilities, while food lovers will delight in the resort's exceptional dining options, featuring fresh, locally-inspired cuisine. The grounds also have a picturesque boardwalk for peaceful nature walks through the mangroves on the property.

Sports enthusiasts will love the resort’s eight brand-new pickleball courts, perfect for friendly matches or competitive games in a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. They even offer tennis and pickleball clincs with Pro Ninka Salopek on Friday, Saturday and Sundays and afterward you can enjoy the Marriott Spa as well.

Beyond the resort, the nearby Sanibel and Captiva Islands offer an array of attractions. Explore pristine beaches known for their abundant seashells, enjoy boutique shopping and dining in charming island settings or visit the JN 'Ding' Darling National Wildlife RefugeThe Education Center also includes a children's area with interactive exhibits.

Fine Dining + Courtyard Steakhouse

After an active day, head over to the Courtyard Steakhouse, which offers a delectable menu of premium steaks and gourmet dishes. The restaurant’s indoor and outdoor seating overlooks the tennis courts, providing a unique dining experience where you can enjoy fine cuisine courtside.

The resort also has Tarpon House for breakfast, lunch and dinners too and the lively Charley's Cabana Bar with live music, dinner and drinks. And for those not wanting to leave the pool, there is flag service for drinks and bites too.

Ideal for Staycations

Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa is the ultimate staycation destination if you're a local Floridian. Enjoy the feeling of being far away while staying close to home. Take advantage of exclusive resident offers and rediscover the beauty of your own backyard.

Side note: as a local who's been to Sanibel several times, I was glad this resort was before the toll bridge too, making it an easily accessible and affordable staycation spot.

Visit and Support Sanibel Post-Hurricane

In September 2022, Hurricane Ian, a Category 4 storm, struck Sanibel Island with devastating force, bringing winds exceeding 150 mph and a storm surge between 8 to 15 feet.  The island suffered extensive damage, including the destruction of the Sanibel Causeway, which severed the primary connection to the mainland.

However, in the two years since the hurricane, Sanibel Island has made significant strides in its recovery efforts. The natural environment, including beaches, seashells, and wildlife, has rebounded remarkably. So, come support this travel gem by visiting as it relies heavily on tourism.

Why You Should Staycation at Sanibel Harbor Marriott

So, whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat, a family-friendly adventure, or a rejuvenating solo escape, Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa offers the perfect blend of luxury and leisure. Book your stay today and experience the magic of Florida’s Gulf Coast like never before.

Luminary Hotel Review in Downtown Ft. Myers

While there are a handful of hotel chains by RSW (Southwest Florida International Airport), there isn't much to do outside of visiting shopping centers or visiting FGCU campus.

For nightlife, dining, and more, you want to be in Downtown, Fort Myers at the new Luminary Hotel & Co. a member of the prestigious Autograph Collection® of Marriott International, Inc. located on the riverfront in downtown Ft. Myers.

Where to stay in Fort Myers, Florida

Luminary Hotel

Soaring 12 stories above downtown, the 243-room boutique hotel has everything you need from the signature Silver King Ocean Brasserie and Lobby Bar; the popular Beacon Social Drinkery; Ella Mae's Diner comfort food eatery; Oxbow Bar & Grill out on the pier; Dean Street Coffee Roaster; The Workshop culinary theater; an indoor and outdoor fitness facility, pool and more.

Luminary's deck pool area on the 4th floor overlooks the Caloosahatchee River

The rooms are very modern with fun-colored wardrobe chests and bar carts, chic lighting and a chaise lounge with a desk.

Plus, great views of downtown, the bridges, and the water.

Oxbow Bar & Grill

Located out on the pier is Luminary's new restaurant property, Oxbow! Inspired by its unique location on the Caloosahatchee River, the casual 120-seat restaurant features both indoor and outdoor seating.

Menu selections include raw oysters and other signature favorites, including the mahi-mahi entrĂ©e that I loved.

Tip: be sure and make a reservation for sunset! The same applies for the Beacon rooftop lounge (get on the list early!), although you can have drinks in the lobby while waiting to be called up the elevator for your table.

Beacon Social Drinkery

This rooftop lounge has outstanding views and a social scene. It's popular with hotel guests and visitors not staying the night. One step out on this roof deck and you'll know why! The craft cocktails are creative with an impressive selection of wine and spirits, served alongside a fresh menu of small plate specialties Definitely a great place for a date, to socialize with friends or to take visitors new to Southwest Floria.

Why is the hotel called Luminary?

You'll notice nods to the local area's luminaries Edison and Ford with retro lighting and nostalgic photos on the walls, combined in a unique way that makes the decor and accents feel modern.

Overall Thoughts

Even though we only live forty minutes away, we have stayed twice at this property and visited the Beacon rooftop multiple times for a reason! Great location, amenities, dining all in a luxuriously chic setting. Beyond the amazing harbor views and amenities, the Luminary is in the heart of it all. You can walk to nearby restaurants and bars as well and next door Convention Center. Perfect for out-of-towners, staycations and locals alike.

Luxury Staycation at Inn on Fifth in Naples Florida

Whether you are visiting from the West coast of Florida or venturing from out-of-state, or only 32 miles away like me, the Inn on Fifth in Naples has everything you could look for in a luxury staycation and more in Southwest Florida.

Experience the Lux Life at the Newly Renovated Inn on Fifth & Club Level Suites

For our 12-year wedding anniversary, my husband and I had the pleasure of staying two nights at the iconic AAA Four-Diamond Inn on Fifth in their Club Level Suites.

Newly renovated rooftop oasis pool

Sophisticated yet unpretentious, the Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Inn on Fifth in Naples Florida is intimate in scale and rich in amenities like the Inn’s newly renovated rooftop oasis pool (located in the main building), soothing Spa on Fifth.

Valet check-in at Inn on Fifth

Why Club Level?

The Inn on Fifth Club Level Suites provides an enhanced guest experience, with a personal concierge, secluded rooftop retreat, daily culinary delights and so much more. The Inn is home to 119 elegantly appointed guest rooms and suites, including 32 luxurious Club Level Suites in a separate private building adjacent to the main building. Each spacious room features chic furnishings, contemporary design, and luxurious bedding, with access to Juliet balconies or terraces for taking in the warm breezes or vibrant streets-cape below.

The spacious Club Level Suites are approximately 550 sq. Ft. with a king-sized bed, connected to a spacious living room with a balcony. The living room is also equipped with a queen-sized pullout bed/couch lounger. Suites can accommodate up to four people, but we did not bring our twins with us for this adult getaway.

Continental Breakfast in Bed

Amenities include a refrigerator, a glass shower and separate bathtub, the simply luxurious signature Inn on Fifth pillow-top mattresses covered with triple sheeting, flatscreen TVs with DirectTV including one in the bathroom, and two waffle weave robes. Also, toiletries were just as lush including bath gel, shampoo, conditioner, bath bomb, lotion and moist toilettes from L'Occitane Provence

Best of all, Club Level guests have exclusive access to the Club Lounge, which offers daily food and beverage presentations such as daily deluxe continental breakfast, afternoon snacks and tea, and a full top-shelf liquor bar with hors d'oeuvres in the evening. During COVID, with a quick call to the concierge, we were able to have our breakfast and evening cocktails and apps delivered right to our room for us to enjoy on our balcony overlooking the beautiful 5th Avenue in downtown Naples, Florida.

The apps were quite filling too, but if you were still hungry there are many restaurants within walking distance or you can order from the hotel in-room dining menu that offers a limited menu from the delicious Ocean Prime restaurant, always a favorite of mine. We did this on the second night and had a Prime Burger and Tuna Tar Tar delivered and charged to our room.

Although I had packed a bottle of Champagne for us to crack open, we never needed to since we received welcome glasses of sparkling wine at check-in and again each evening including Moet Chandon Rose - I was in heaven! You could also select from domestic beers, liquor, whiskey, and many more alcohol options to choose from. Upon hearing this, my mother and her boyfriend are now looking to book a staycation there soon as well, lol.

Club Level also provides access to a private rooftop deck with a hot tub. When we went up it was empty so had it all to ourselves. Meanwhile, all hotel guests have access to the larger rooftop pool deck across the street, which we went to as well.

Club Level guests receive complimentary evening cocktails on the pool deck too

Overall: This is a destination resort, not to be missed. We felt truly pampered and hope to make this a new annual tradition!

Betsy's Best Healthy Granola Recipe

In my quest to have my kids eat healthier, I came across Betsy’s Best Almond Butter and became an immediate fan. Even more so, when I heard Betsy’s story and that she also lives in Southwest Florida.

Registered dietician Betsy Opyt started making nut butters in her home for her daughter, who was a picky eater. She enjoyed experimenting with healthy recipes and started making bigger and bigger batches and giving her nut and seed butters out to friends, family and coworkers. They encouraged her to go wider so she started selling a few hundred jars each weekend at Naples’ Farmers Market on Vanderbilt and Airport Road. Pleased with the response and selling out in four hours, she soon partnered with a friend to make it wider business in 2012.

Now, Betsy’s Best has a line of five spreads available in 2100 stores in 39 states including Whole Foods and Amazon. She has developed many sweet and savory flavors from Cinnamon Almond Butter to Gourmet Cardamom Cashew Butter with Chia Seeds. Even, a more recent Coconut flavor too. Next up, she hopes to move beyond butters.

Meeting up with her, she also shared the following AH-MAZING granola bar recipe that’s easy for parents to whip up.

Healthy Granola Bar Recipe

Yield: 22 bars
  • 1/2 c peanut, almond, or cashew nut butter
  • 1/4 c honey, agave nectar, or coconut nectar
  • 1 egg, or 2 egg whites
  • 2 T canola oil or coconut oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 T chia seeds
  • 1 1/2 c old fashioned oats
  • 1 1/2 c rice krispies
  • 1/2 c chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 tsp Pink Himalayan Sea Salt
  • 1/2 c dark chocolate chips
  • 1/2 c dried fruit, cherries, raisins, cranraisins, or goldenberries
Beat nut butter, honey, eggs, oil, sugar, and vanilla. Combine oats, cereal, salt, and chia, in a bowl and then add to the liquid mixture. Stir in chocolate chips, walnuts, and dried fruits. Transfer to a 13×9 in pan and firmly press mixture with the back of spatula or wax paper in baking pan.

Heat oven to 350 degrees and bake 15-17 minutes.

How to Have a Great Staycation

It’s fun being a tourist in your own town sometimes. Before school started for my boys, we spent some quality fun time together during an overnight getaway at IHG Staybridge Suites in Naples, which is only twenty minutes away from our home.

Sure, "staycation" is a buzzword and I was skeptical, but after experiencing one, I'm so down. It's great to check out without having to incur the extra expense of traveling far. And forget an Air B&B when you can have all the conveniences and amenities of a suite and a hotel. In fact, I didn't want to leave and go back to reality.
Staycation Guide and Hotel Review: Staybridge Suites Naples Gulf Coast, Florida

Benefits for Families and Staycations at Staybridge Suites Naples :

  • Large suites, all with full kitchens are ideal for families. Our two-bedroom suite had a patio with direct pool access, so I was able to watch my boys swim from a private lounge chair in the shade, while sipping a pina colada.

  • Complimentary breakfast each morning with kid-friendly options too, plus juice and coffee.
  • Location! Although not on the beach, but US-41, you're very close and can walk to Waterside Shops or take a short ride to Downtown Naples' 5th Avenue and the Naples Pier.
  • Tiki Bar by the pool. Kids can spend the entire time splashing and you can be sipping, thus a win/win for families ;)

  • Free Social Hour! WHAT? Yup! Starting at 5:30 p.m. out at the Tiki Bar, just flash your room key and receive a glass of wine or beer on draft at no fee. Be sure and tip the friendly bartender of course. My husband had a stout and I called a Cab, Cabernet that is!
  • Appetizers in the Lobby - besides the generous glass of red wine, they have appetizers and snacks in the lobby in the evening. The evening that we stayed, the hotel had yummy grilled cheese, salad, and tomato soup available for guests. My boys loved it so much that we ended up going light on dinner after.
  • Bicycles are available to rent at this Naples hotel.
  • Parking is also free (I always hate that additional expense). Still, when planning a staycation or weekend getaway, it’s worth considering the broader costs and convenience of where you park, especially if you explore nearby attractions or extend your trip beyond one hotel. In larger cities or busier areas, options like hourly secure parking can provide flexibility and peace of mind, ensuring you only pay for the time you actually need.
  • Fitness Center - it's not grand but has everything you need. I also loved having it to myself at night and even turned the volume up and channel to Twilight. This wellness me time was really appreciated.
  • DVD library The lobby has a catalog of complimentary movies available, you just need to put down a $10 deposit, which you get back once the disc is returned. And yes, there are DVD players in your room. After the kids had a bath, we watched Muppets in Space that evening together.

Tips for a Great Staycation - act like a tourist in your own city. Load up the car like you can't go back home again (wine, pool noodles, etc.)

Tips for a Great Staycation:

  • Pack like you can't easily go home. Go big, so you don't have to go back home, lol. After all, you're driving, so load that trunk up. I even tossed in our pool noodles, some pool toys and the and the best pool floats for the boys. The key is to make this stay your temporary home away from home, but without having to clean up after. *sigh*
  • Go overboard on wine and snacks. The wine to unwind and the snacks to indulge. Again, you don't have to worry about oz counts for flying! And whatever you don't finish you can bring back with you - nothing wasted.
  • Act like a tourist in your own city. Go do something that all the visitors do, but you either haven't or hardly ever take advantage of. We went to the Naples Botanical Garden for the first time after living here for four years and it was beautiful. If you need ideas, look through the pamphlets in the lobby.
  • Relax! After all, tomorrow is another day. Sure, you're still close to home, but pretend you're much further away. Don't think about money or what needs to be done after you get back, just chill! This is your staycation vacation!

Afternoon Tea Guide for Southwest Florida

High Tea Rooms in SWFL

Wisteria Tea Room, Fort Myers

A charming tea room in downtown Ft. Myers housed in a 1919 bungalow offers afternoon tea from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily except Sundays. Reservations are highly recommended, especially during season (Jan-April). What I really enjoyed is the tea selection and the fact that it's bottomless tea, so that you can try different flavors and not stick with just one tea choice. 2512 Second St, Fort Myers, FL 33901 wisteriatearoom.com

Hooked on Seafood at BRIO Tuscan Grille this Spring

Love seafood? Me too! Celebrate the greatness of fish at one of my favorite restaurants, BRIO Tuscan Grille this spring for lunch and dinner and experience their new Seafood Celebration menu, from Tuesday, April 3–Sunday, June 17.

I got to sample the new menu (tough life!) and it was even more delightful than I was expecting. Made from scratch, the dishes include the finest and freshest ingredients.

Lunch (Salad & Seafood Celebration):

Strawberry Balsamic Salmon Salad

  • Strawberry Balsamic Salmon Salad: Mixed greens, salmon, grapes, spicy pecans, Gorgonzola, herb vinaigrette. The portion is more than generous, easily enough for a full meal and not a starter as I pictured. I plan on going back just for this! It's light, refreshing and filling, but not overly so. The salmon melts in your mouth too.
  • Grilled Salmon Fresca: Grilled asparagus, sweet potatoes, spinach, red peppers, pesto vinaigrette, Feta, tomatoes, balsamic glaze.
  • Shrimp Mediterranean: Spicy grilled shrimp, orzo, farro, broccoli, asparagus, grape tomatoes, spinach, Feta, pesto vinaigrette
  • Lobster & Shrimp Ravioli: Spicy black pepper cream, spinach, grape tomatoes
  • Grilled Salmon Fresca: Grilled asparagus, sweet potatoes, spinach, red peppers, pesto vinaigrette, Feta, tomatoes, balsamic
  • Shrimp Mediterranean: Spicy grilled shrimp, orzo, farro, broccoli, asparagus, grape tomatoes, spinach, Feta, pesto vinaigrette
  • Lobster & Shrimp Ravioli: Spicy black pepper cream, spinach, grape tomatoes
BRIO Lobster and Shrimp Ravioli
Grilled Salmon Fresca

Dinner (Seafood Celebration):

  • Grilled Salmon Fresca: Grilled asparagus, sweet potatoes, spinach, red peppers, pesto vinaigrette, Feta, tomatoes, balsamic My mother especially liked this dish and she isn't even that big of a salmon fan!

  • Shrimp Mediterranean: Spicy grilled shrimp, orzo, farro, broccoli, asparagus, grape tomatoes, spinach, Feta, pesto vinaigrette
  • Lobster & Shrimp Ravioli: Spicy black pepper cream, spinach, grape tomatoes. Seriously, how can you go wrong with this? I was at first scared about the 'spicy' descriptor, but I'm a wimp when it comes to that and found that it was just right and flavorful.

Try at Home?

If you would like to try to cook such a lunch at home, you will definitely need a good grill. Anyway, there’re numerous arguments for getting a grill. If you’re unsure which specs to look for, you may be interested in knowing more about Kamado grills as a first grill for your home.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary preview of the new holiday menu in exchange for my honest review. But I was already a fan of the restaurant prior to this tasting.
