How Does Tea Culture Vary Around The World?

One of my favorite topics... tea (Camellia Sinensis)!

When tea first originated in Southern China during the Shang dynasty, it was originally used as a medicinal drink. Chinese people and many other cultures still use it for this purpose, however, it is also consumed for numerous other reasons nowadays. It is thought to have originated around the 3rd Century, but it wasn’t until much later that it was exported around the world. After tea spread far and wide throughout the 16th Century, different countries and cultures have adapted it and enjoyed it in diverse ways.

China is Famous For Its Teas

China is the country that started it all, and it is believed that tea was exported to Japan and Korea in the 9th Century. This means that China was probably enjoying tea for around 600 years longer than anywhere else. For this reason, it is ingrained in the culture of the country. Tea rituals are common practice when entertaining guests. Visitors to a household will sit and watch as the host prepares the teacups and brews the tea. They will ceremoniously pour some tea out first, and then tip this away before pouring out the beverages for everyone’s consumption.

Chinese culture has been exported around the world in many ways, beyond tea too. For example, the Fu 88 slot at Betway shows how the Chinese association of red with money has spread across the world. The title also features dragon imagery which is commonly linked with Chinese culture. There are plenty of mobile games that reflect how Chinese traditions have spread around the world as well. These include Honor of Kings and CrossFire, which both draw inspiration from Chinese folklore. These are hugely popular not just in China, but in western markets as well.

Tea in Britain

It should come as no surprise that the UK and Ireland are two of the biggest tea drinkers per capita in the world. Indeed, tea is one of the things regarded nowadays as quintessentially British. The first record of tea among the English came in 1615 from East India Trading Company worker Richard Wickham, who wrote a letter requesting the leafy drink from a merchant in Macao. It was later described by Peter Mundy on a visit to Fiji in 1637 as “water with a kind of herb in it.” The official trade of tea in England began in 1664, and by the 1800s the country was importing around 24 million pounds per year.

Tea is an important part of the culture in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland, but it is no longer commonly consumed as part of a ritual. Still, you can partake in a decadent Afternoon Tea at famous hotels throughout the UK. The refined custom of afternoon tea is a wonderful way to take a respite from the hectic pace of today’s busy world. The elegant ritual of Afternoon Tea is credited to Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford. As was customary during the later 1700′s and early 1800′s, people would eat a huge breakfast, tiny lunch, and then a substantial dinner around 8:00 at night. The Duchess, describing a “sinking feeling” during the afternoon, began to request tea and cakes to tide her over. Soon, she invited her friends to share the ritual with her, and it quickly became a fashionable custom.

Another great afternoon tea to drink is an herbal tea like Chamomille since there isn't any caffeine. For more on this do check out this informative In-Depth Guide on Chamomile.

Tea in The Middle East

In Arab countries, there is a widespread fondness of tea, with Turkey and Iran making it into the top four countries in the world for tea consumption per capita. Most of the tea produced in Turkey is Rize tea, which is named after a province on the Black Sea coast, famous for its fertile tea-growing soil. Iran is also renowned for having exceptional land for tea growing. Gilan in the north has the perfectly mild weather, soil quality, and fresh spring water needed to produce high-quality tea.

In Middle Eastern countries, people consume tea at all times of day, and it is a common feature of celebrations. Herbal and black teas are extremely popular, but some people are known to drink it with milk as well.

USA and the Popularization of Iced Tea

The United States is only ranked at number 35 in the world’s tea-drinking countries, and the drink is not completely ingrained in the culture here like it is elsewhere. However, the country can be credited with contributing to the evolution of tea drinking in a way that has spread across the world. This is, of course, the introduction of iced tea.

According to the legend, the cold version of the drink first came about at the World’s Fair in St. Louis in 1904. At the event, a group of Indians were running a stall selling traditional black tea. However, due to the sweltering temperatures of the day, people didn’t want to consume hot beverages. So to counter the problem, they decided to fill the glasses with ice. The rest is history, and now Americans drink 40 million cups of iced tea every year. The drink has been exported to various countries, with big companies like Lipton profiting massively from the growing popularity of this way of drinking tea.

Tea Travel

For tea aficionados, discovering all the different cultures and contributions from various countries to the progression of tea is a must. The best way to experience all the diverse ways to enjoy the iconic drink would be to visit all the main tea drinking countries. Only then can you get a rounded experience of everything to do with tea.

I had the chance to participate in a matcha tea ceremony in Japan, indulged in afternoon tea in England, sipped strong black tea in Turkey and can't wait to experience the rest.

Adagio tea from around the world
Adagio is actually my go-to and the easiest to order from. They make it simple to understand and navigate through the different varieties and provide Facebook messenger updates on your order along the way.

The site has a large collection of teas that are broken up by the type of leaf - green, white, oolong (my favorites), chai, black tea, pu-erh and herbals/roobios.

I especially enjoy their white blueberry tea, Jasmine yin hao, and fujian jasmine pearl master blend. You can also order sample sizes to see if you like it first before ordering more.

Adagio makes a great and reasonable tea maker for those looking to get started drinking loose leaf. Simply pour in the desired amount of loose leaf tea, add hot water, brew and then put over your mug and it drains instantly into your tea cup. I have two!

3 New Shades of Earl Grey Twinings Tea

Forget 50 Shades of Grey, Twinings now offers 3 new steaming hot flavors of Earl Grey tea that are sure to satisfy. Sorry, couldn’t help but play with the innuendos there ;)

It’s no secret that I’m a tea fanatic, tea aficionado, tea obsessed, whatever you want to call it, which is why I was delighted to test out the three new flavors of Earl Grey tea from Twinings.

Three New Twinings Earl Grey Tea Flavors

Twinings Earl Grey teas are now available in Lavender, Extra Bold and Jasmine flavors.

  1. Jasmine Earl Grey is an exclusive blend in the market, mixing an intoxicating scent and a slightly sweet taste.
  2. Lavender Earl Grey has a floral and fresh aroma with a very soothing taste. This blend is perfect for when you want to unwind and relax.
  3. Extra Bold Earl Grey is an intensified bergamot blend enhanced with natural citrus flavors, which provides an uplifting and vibrant rich taste.

I love Jasmine tea to begin with, so it’s not surprising that was my favorite of the three new varieties, but Lavender was nice and relaxing too and tasted like a spa in a tea cup. The extra bold, meanwhile, was a powerful way to start off my day though since it provided a strong wake-up call and extra pep. In fact, I feel like I was more productive the mornings that I sipped it. Best of all, the three new flavors come in 20 count boxes for only $2.99!

Brewing Tip

To savor the full flavor of these teas, bring water to boil, and pour over the tea as soon as it reaches boiling. Over-boiling will cause oxygen to be reduced, making the tea taste “flat.” Remove tea bag after 3 minutes to avoid over brewing. I also like to reuse the tea bag for a second cup at a lighter steeping.

The Fascinating Backstory of Earl Grey Tea

Twinings classic Earl Grey tea was first blended by Richard Twining in 1831, when Prime Minister Charles Grey asked him to replicate a tea he once received by a Chinese Mandarin. The Prime Minister gave his royal approval, which resulted in the creation of the first Earl Grey blend. To this day Twinings Earl Grey boxes are signed by descendants of Mr. Charles Grey. Right now each pack is signed by the current 7th Earl Grey and one of Twinings’ nine Master Blenders. How cool is that?

What gives Earl Grey its unique spicy taste? It is flavored with bergamot, a Mediterranean citrus fruit.

New steep by Bigelow organic tea

America’s own Bigelow Tea since 1945 (now under third-generation family leadership) is adding to its vast repertoire of teas with the launch of a new line of premium craft-blend teas – steep by Bigelow, which I was excited to learn is USDA Certified organic.

But why should you buy organic tea? Aren’t tea leaves organic already?
There have been studies that found traces of pesticides in some tea bags, thus, steeping straight into your brew and you! For example, dangerously high levels of pesticides were recently found in Celestial Seasonings and Lipton tea. After learning this, I have since looked for organic teas to ensure I was sipping only the healthy goodness of tea. It's not often easy to find organic tea in tea bag form either, so steep makes it super convenient to have wholesome tea on-the-go. Fortunately, for Bigelow tea fans in general though, you’ll be happy to learn that they test all of their teas extensively, both Organic and Non-Organic, for over 300 different types pesticides using two independent testing labs. Their test results continually confirm that there are no pesticides in a brewed cup of Bigelow tea. Thus, all of their teas are 100% safe for your consumption. The same can't be said for other popular tea bag brands though.

Searching for a slimming diet tea? Look at here for a pre-workout tea.

Inspired by the popularity of the craft beer movement, the steep by Bigelow signature series connects with the passionate tea consumer by supporting everyone’s personal and individual palate. In addition to being Certified USDA Organic, the line has the added benefits of being non-GMO and gluten free.

First Watch restaurants here in SWFL are already serving the line as their tea of choice.

Their 13 creatively blended teas each deliver a unique flavor:

  1. Oolong & Jasmine Green Tea – My favorite of the group, but I’m partial to oolongs and green teas. Slightly nutty oolong with delicate floral Jasmine notes
  2. Dandelion & Peach Rooibos & Green Tea – smooth tea with sweet, fruity peach notes and earthy dandelion finish
  3. Pure Green Tea – a delicate green tea with subtle astringency
  4. Green Tea with Pomegranate – smooth green tea with pomegranate and a pleasantly tart finish
  5. Pure Green Decaffeinated Tea – a delicate green tea with subtle astringency
  6. Earl Grey – a smooth, bold black tea with a crisp, authentically citrusy rich flavor of real bergamot
  7. English Breakfast Certified Fair Trade Tea –smooth, malty with flowery top notes and a pleasantly astringent finish
  8. Mint caffeine free Herbal Tea – a smooth & soothing blend of spearmint & peppermint
  9. Rooibos Hibiscus caffeine free Herbal Tea – tart and delicious rooibos red tea with subtle delicate hibiscus
  10. Sweet Cinnamon – a smooth, black tea distinctively balanced with sweet, spicy cinnamon
  11. Chai – a perfectly balanced blend of rich black tea and exotic spices
  12. Lemon Ginger caffeine free Herbal Tea – a clean citrus herb tea pleasantly spiced with ginger
  13. Chamomile Citrus caffeine free Herbal Tea – full bodied sweet chamomile with a bright, citrus complement

steep by Bigelow teas are now available online and at grocery stores nationwide for the suggested price of $4.49 for a 20 count box, thus only 22 cents a tea bag!

Disclaimer: I was NOT paid to do this post, but did receive tea bag samples to facilitate my review.

Arbor Teas Compostabile Bag

I can't remember the last time I purchased tea from a store. Thanks to the internet, I'm able to get teas from around the world right at my fingertips. I've been online shopping for tea for several years now and the quality is so superb that the best place for a good cuppa by me is in my cupboard. I've blogged about a few online sites that I use already, but I just discovered a new one, Arbor Teas.

Arbor Teas offers one of the Internet's largest selections of loose leaf organic tea and tisanes – two-thirds of which are Fair Trade Certified. They have selections from all varieties of tea (black, green, white, oolong and pu-erh) as well as South African rooibos, South American yerba mate and herbal infusions. I stick to the green, white and oolongs though.

I'm really enjoying their USDA Organic Silver Needle White Tea and Organic Plum Oolong.

What is especially unique is their 100% backyard compostable packaging! Composed of a cellulose film made from wood pulp sourced from sustainably managed trees, Arbor Teas' packaging can actually break down in a backyard compost setting. I have a compost bin in my kitchen and outside, which I mix with coffee grounds, used tea leaves after several steepings, egg shells, etc., so I love the idea that I can add their packaging right into the mix. Depending on your location and weather, your Arbor Tea package should completely compost within 3 -4 months. When you go through as much tea as I do, it only made sense to start composting the tea leaves. I then spread the new soil around my rose bushes and trees.

Don’t have a compost heap yet? Read the informative article from the Arbor Teas Blog on How to Compost Tea and other Organics in a Home Compost Pile

The Tea Spot Pyramid Tea Sachets

Embedded image permalinkWhen traveling it's hard to find quality tea. Sure, there's always a local cafe for coffee aficionados, but not all carry tea and if they do it's usually the generic pressed tea bags that taste bitter. I use this trick to pack loose leaf tea, but it's still a pain having to carry all the accompanying gadgets in order to drink it.

However, this year when I went to BlogHer 14 (Things to do in San Jose), I was able to bring quality loose leaf tea with me in a convenient bag thanks to The Tea Spot.

The Tea Spot just launched a new line of biodegradable pyramid tea sachets, featuring ten of their top-selling handcrafted whole leaf teas (5 conventional, and 5 organic). My favorites being Coconut Cabana Oolong and Boulder Blues. Each of the tea sachets holds a generous portion of full leaf tea, so you can now drink a mug of premium tea with ultra-convenience. These premium-sized pyramid bags give whole leaf tea room to expand to a full flavor and aroma, as the patented open-weave sachet material allows unrestricted full-bodied infusions. Plus they’re biodegradable, making the whole process perfectly simple and eco-friendly!

Find the perfect tea match with the Tea Wizard

Like tea, but not sure which blends or varieties to try next? Stuck in a tea rut? Looking for a personal tea shopper? Well, you're in luck...

Los Angeles-based hand-crafted tea purveyor, Art of Tea, just launched a free "Tea Wizard" tool that fits customers to a "T" (think a tea personality test to match you with your perfect blend).

Being a tea addict/aficionado, I was skeptical of a simple survey providing the right matches for such a sophisticated (humble too) tea drinker like myself, lol. After all, I'm quite fussy. Yet, after answering the quick and easy discovery questions that ran the gamut from flavor preference to interests/hobbies, I was impressed and surprised with the accurate selections that it produced. Each result sounded like a tea that I would actually enjoy and purchase - a mix of green, white and oolong teas with a slight floral/fruity blend, but nothing too sweet or herbal either.

These were my top 6 results:
Based on these recommendations, I then sampled the pics and found I liked them all, which I was surprised about. Here's a cup of the White Coconut Creme:
According to Art of Tea Founder & CEO Steve Schwartz "The platform is intended to take the guesswork out of shopping for tea online, and helps shoppers whittle down Art of Tea's myriad selections to blends and products that best fit their daily life -- whether it's a Sweet Almond Wild Berry black tea to start their day, or the award-winning caffeine-free Brûlée Mint to relax at night."

Try it out and find what blends the Tea Wizard recommends for you! I'd love to hear your picks.

Amoda Tea Box Subscription

I love/am addicted to monthly subscription boxes already (Graze, PopSugar and Citrus Lane), so when I heard about the Amoda Tea monthly tea tasting box delivered to your door, I couldn't type fast enough to sign-up.

Amoda searches for premium tea importers and artisan tea blenders from around the globe. Their tea tasters try each one and select the three most outstanding of the bunch to be included in each month's Tasting Box. You receive 3 different teas in each box, enough to make 5-7 cups of each. There might be a monthly theme, but there will always be a great variety to help you better explore the world of tea. You also get a steeping guide, tasting notes and stories that make each tea and its blender special.

Best of all, it's reasonably priced at only $12/month, including shipping! However, I have a special reader coupon for $6 off - half price- your first month. Coupon code: teawithtara valid for one week only. You can cancel anytime too. The cutoff for March's tea box is actually tomorrow, Feb. 25th, otherwise you have to wait to receive the April box.

Here is Amoda Tea's February's Box featuring Verdant Tea blends:
I especially liked the Master Han's 2013 Sheng Pu-er tea, which can be steeped several times. Unlike other Pu-er's this one was much smoother. I also liked the included story about how the Verdant owners bought a brick of tea on their wedding day and drink a cup every year on their anniversary, so sweet and perfect for a Valentine's themed box.

Right now they do not have the option to customize what kind of teas you'd like to recieve, but they said they might build up to that. Personally, I'd love a Green Tea or Oolong-only option with fun flavors. For now, they try to find three different teas that are a wide variety. There's always a caffeine free tea in the box though. You have to like flavored teas though! Finding the best all-natural flavored, scented or blended teas is their specialty.

Disclosure: While I received my first box free in exchange for my honest review, I am continuing the subscription plan at my own expense. :)

I recently used mine in Florida to stay hydrated and healthy.
  • 7. And for hot tea, there's the Mighty Leaf TeaTop Brew Mug $14.50, perfect for tea lovers who commute. The used tea pouch nestles in the lid – no mess! Plus, this prevents your tea from getting too bitter or having to get your hands wet trying to remove a pouch from hot water or finding a place to dispose of it. I often take to-go cups for when I'm on the train going into the city and toss both the cup and soggy t-bag, but this would be a more Eco-friendly option and just as easy. I'll also be able to save the used tea leaves for my compost and rose bushes.

Drink Tea on-the-go for your Health & Diet

As you've probably discovered from reading my blog, I'm an avid tea junkie. While most Americans crave their cup of Joe each morning, I regret a day that goes by without a quality cuppa. I'm not talking about the stuff that comes over processed and minced in tea bags, but some good quality whole leaf loose oolong, green or white tea. I literally have two shelves of tea taking up room in my cabinets, not to mention another two rows of cups and tea devices.

Tea has become my obsession and an indulgence really, which is why when I travel, I hate settling for whatever I can find. And now with Summer approaching the iced teas that are offered are often super sugary and taste like its made from powder, not tea. Luckily, when I flew to Orlando last month, I brought along with me a tiny Steep & Go adapter for only $6.95. It is designed to easily cold-brew loose leaf tea on-the-go. It fits on disposable Dasani and Evian water bottles making it super travel-friendly. It's also a great alternative to ready-to-drink teas, which are full of sugar and sodium. I had assumed the tea leaves would go into the Steep and Go container, but instead, you put a few pinches of tea in the actual water bottle. The device then filters the water through the capsule without the leaves, allowing the tea to brew freely in the water and stay submerged throughout. It's so easy and smart! It also comes in purple and blue color options and is BPA free and reusable.

To fill the Steep & Go, I brought along small packets of tea from The Tea Spot, a philanthropic and organic loose leaf tea company based in Boulder, Colorado. The company donates 10% of all profits to cancer wellness programs. Check out their tea selection here, but I really like their Boulder Blues, Keep Fit green tea (perfect for cold infusions) and White Peony Tea.

Also, when traveling, try scooping tea into a day of the week pill box, that way you have a teaspoon of loose leaf tea for each day of your trip. Also, a great way to take loose leaf tea to work.

While on a recent vacation, I spent some time reading about tea too. I had picked up a copy of The Ultimate Tea Diet by Mark Ukra, who discusses the history of tea and the health & diet benefits of the Camellia Sinensis plant.

It was a fun and easy read. Basically, he recommends that dieters wean themselves off coffee by replacing it with any kind of tea that they like. Dieters can select from green, black, oolong or white tea and may consume it hot or iced.

The main things to remember is that it must be real tea (not herbal or rooibos), you must drink a lot and avoid adding excessive amounts of sweeteners. I really think this has a lot of merit, because ever since I started having loose tea at work (5 years ago), I wouldn't feel as hungry and I felt better and noticed an increase in my metabolism too.

 Health Benefits of Tea:

Tea Trivia: Did you know that America (well technically it was The New World at that time) drank tea before the mother country? Yes, Asia was the first to brew tea leaves (camila sensis) and then the Dutch discovered the brew during their famous trade routes with the Dutch Indies Company and started drinking tea. They then had colonies in North America like New Amsterdam (now New York) and it was these colonialists who drank tea 10 years prior to the English. Interesting, no? We all assume the British are the connoisseurs, but we can say Americans were drinking tea before them. Tea bags, are also an American invention to contain tea leaves without having a teapot or other tools.

Chocolate Afternoon Tea

Like chocolate? Like tea? Like me?

Well, then you'd love The Langham, Huntington Hotel & Spa in Pasadena's “Chocolate Afternoon Tea,” which just launched last weekend and will now run every Sunday. This extravagant tea features all the delights of a traditional high tea, but with a decidedly chocolate twist. So, guests can enjoy a selection of savory tea sandwiches, scones with Devonshire cream, fruit tarts, mousse torts and crème brûlées – all containing a different chocolate essence. Hungry yet? Well, there is also a chocolate fountain with plenty of treats to dip, including marshmallows. Besides their unlimited refills of fine tea (I get their Green Tea Passion) there are three selections of pure liquid chocolate and champagne! Seriously, it's my favorite luxury. Almost trumps a day at the spa. I also found out that in 1865, The Langham, London was Europe’s first grand hotel to serve afternoon tea and that later on Princess Diana used to frequent it, thus a true royal experience.

I actually took my mother and Raphael to their first afternoon tea there. My mom at first was complaining that she was hungry and wanted a real lunch, but was soon too stuffed to finish her scone and Raphael was originally grumbling about feeling out of place, soon look rather satisfied eating and drinking in the feminine setting.

Chocolate Afternoon Tea is served at The Langham on Sundays from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in The Lobby Lounge, beginning March 22. Price is $59 and reservations are recommended. For those seeking a traditional tea experience without the chocolate extravaganza, which I also like, Langham’s Signature Afternoon Tea is served Thursday – Saturday from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at $39 per person. For those in Boston, Boston's Langham hotel also offers a Chocolate Tea, but it might be a little different, not sure.

Alright, get ready for a chocolate orgy of photos:

Tea for two

My great great grandmother used to always sing the following rhyme: one two three, come with me, bring your dolly and have some tea. Just a memory for the day.

Call me naive, but way back in college when I was packing for my study abroad in London, I pictured having high tea at fancy places, but during my entire six months there, I barely even sipped tea in my flat never mind at a fancy tea place. I finally got the full British tea experience today though out here in California.

During lunch my coworker and I traveled to The Langham Hotel & Spa in Pasadena, which in honor of their flagship property opening in London back on June 10, 1865, all of the Langham Hotels were celebrating the anniversary by having the timeless tradition of Afternoon Tea, offered at it's original price of one shilling, six pence (15 cents). Normally $45.00, we got to have an elegant afternoon tea for only 15 cents each, the bill literally came to 32 cents (I took a picture to prove it), crazy.

Besides the price I was especially delighted to see that their friendly staff was dressed in 19th century clothing--I wasn't expecting that.

In the background there was a pianist playing classical music and show tunes like Sound of Music's Edelweiss.

First, we got to select between four different flavors of tea, apparently the same ones from when they first opened. I went with the African Amber tea, with hibiscus and exotic flavors, which was smooth and although I don't usually add cream to my tea, I figured I should try the full experience and did so. The tea was also served with a glass of water and a Kir Royal champagne cocktail (yum). Next came a three level tiered plate with little finger sandwiches like a smoked salmon puff and a cucumber sandwich, plus scones, macaroons and other sweets. Take a look:

As for the hotel itself, it's stunning when you pull up. It looks like a bigger version of Mr. Darcy's mansion in the A&E presentation of Pride and Prejudice. Yes, I'm a romantic.
