5 Easy Ways to Introduce Peanut Foods to your Infant

Introducing peanuts to your infant early can help prevent peanut allergies

Pediatricians and allergists recommend feeding small amounts of peanut foods to infants at the right stage of their development can have life-changing effects.

New guidelines encourage parents to introduce baby-friendly peanut foods between 4 to 6 months. I started feeding my boys almond butter and peanuts early too and thankfully neither have a nut allergy.
Early introduction of peanut-containing foods can reduce the risk of developing a peanut allergy by up to 86%.

5 Easy Ways to Introduce Peanut Foods to your Infant

Whole nuts should not be given to children under 5 years of age. Nor should peanut butter directly from a spoon or in lumps/dollops be given to children less than 4 years of age.

1. Mix with water, formula or breast milk

Thin 2 tsp. of peanut butter with 2-3 tsp. hot water, formula or breast milk. Allow to cool before serving. You can also use organic Peanut Powder. Try this three times per week.

2. Mix with food

Blend 2 tsp. of peanut butter into 2-3 tbsp. of foods like infant cereal, applesauce, yogurt (if already tolerating dairy), pureed chicken or tofu.

3. Mix with produce

Stir in 2 tsp. of powdered peanut butter into 2 tbsp. of previously tolerated pureed fruits or vegetables.

You can also try MyPeanut apple and peanut butter pouches for babies 4 months +.

Using a soft baby spoon will help ease the transition.

4. Peanut snacks

Give your baby a peanut-containing teething food, such as peanut puffs.

5. Teething biscuits

Teething infants who are older and self-feeding may enjoy homemade peanut butter teething biscuits.

Have you tried dry nail polish?

I'm excited to announce that I'm now a Color Street Independent Stylist!!👏 I've always avoided affiliate sales and turned down so many other offers over the years because I just didn't feel passionate enough about the product. But I'm so obsessed with dry nail polish strips that it only made sense to sign up!💅

What is dry nail polish? And why does it rock?

  • 100% real nail polish, not stickers.

  • Big selection of solids, patterns, glitter (my fave) and French manicure strips.
  • Made in the U.S.A.

  • Chip-resistant, long-lasting color – up to 14 days!

Color Street Nail Strips after 11 days and still going strong - Tokyo Lights

"I Love Your Nails!" – Said Everyone

Even before motherhood, I never used to put color on my nails because of the expense and time of a manicure. Plus, I'd chip the paint within a day. So, I'd just do boring clear polish.

Now, I just apply these 100% real nail polish strips myself within 15 minutes and they can last up to 14 days and I get sooo many compliments.

I tried gel, but that was also costly and left my real nails ruined and weak. Now, my nails have grown longer by wearing them. I even use the remaining strips in the set for my big toes as a statement color pedicure too. So fun!

I love that I can easily change out my look with the seasons and holidays too.

Here's how easy it is to apply dry nail polish. No tools needed:

What to do in Cozumel Without a Shore Excursion

This was my second time cruising to Cozumel. The first time was with Princess Cruises and most recently with Royal Caribbean. The first time I booked an excursion through the ship and went to the ruins, but this time my friend and I decided to explore on our own.

About Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is Mexico's largest island, nestled just 12 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the Caribbean sea. It's mostly undeveloped but is a popular cruise ship port of call and for all-inclusive resorts Mexico due to its famed scuba diving and beaches.

It's pretty safe! The drug-related crime in Mexico that makes the headlines is concentrated near the borders. Violent crime in Cozumel is rare. It also helps that it's not attached to the actual continent.

TIP: There isn't any need to exchange USD for Pesos as merchants will take cash or card. So, we only used credit cards and USD dollars, which they would convert for us with a calculator for us to see. This way we didn't get stuck with foreign money or coins when we went home.

Things to do in Cozumel, Mexico Without a Cruise Shore Excursion Booked:

Exit the Port Gates

Once you walk down the large pier, you'll see Bubba Gumps, Senor Frogs, Duty-Free shopping, jewelry stores and a large marketplace of wares. This is definitely fun to explore, but if you want better deals you need to leave this area. Even Hard Rock Cafe is outside the exit gates, past the taxi lines.

Note:  We are two young-ish women and we felt perfectly safe leaving the port area in the afternoon just the two of us. Neither of us speaks Spanish either.

Walk to Mayan Plaza

Once you exit the gates turn right two blocks, cross the street on your left and you'll see an outdoor restaurant serving $1 cerveza (beer) and lots of fruity drinks. On the other side of this restaurant is the start of the colorful plaza filled with souvenir shops selling blankets, ceramics, silver, replica bags and much more. There is also another tequila store at the end.

Pose in front of the other Rainbow Cozumel Sign

Besides the brightly colored walls in the Mayan Plaza, which had me in Instagram heaven, the best part is seeing actual Mayan ruins in the back and posing in front of the rainbow COZUMEL sign in front of the building. There is a similar sign by the port as you can see in my top post image, but this one is less visited and offers the additional historic significance.

Enjoy a Fish Spa Pedicure

Also in the same plaza, you will see what looks like a bunch of aquarium tanks with chairs above them. This is a fish spa. It's popular in Europe, but not allowed in the States. Basically, you sit in the chair, the staff cleans your feet and then you plunge your bare feet into the tank full of little small fish called Garra rufa or "doctor fish" because they eat away dead skin found on people's feet, leaving newer skin exposed.

Sounds weird? It is, but it's also fun and better than any scrub I have ever used. I tried the experience in Barcelona and in Prague before and I know some have argued the cleanliness of this practice since it's not regulated, but whatever. Each time my feet have never felt so baby smooth after and the only side effects suffered was being tickled by the fish as they feasted on my calluses and dead skin. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like the fish are swimming and rubbing up against your feet. 15 minutes for $30 USD.

Free Tequila Tastings

Within walking distance of the pier, you will see several shops offering free tastings. Our favorite with over sixty different flavors is Chile Tequila. The storefront is inside the covered bazaar area. Coco and Peanut Butter Tequila were surprisingly delicious. The staff was very friendly and they took credit card too.

I've been told no matter where you buy tequila though to watch them wrap your purchase so they don't do a bait and switch with the cheaper stuff. We didn't have this problem, but we heard other locations doing this scam.

If you can still stand ... you could go to several of these spots, but for all the samples you drink you are expected to at least buy a bottle or travel size portion to take back home. Once you board the ship they will confiscate any liquor purchased, but it will be returned to you on your last day.

Clear Lounge Underwater Oxygen Bar in Cozumel

Dive into the Underwater Oxygen Bar

Clear Lounge is the world's 1st underwater oxygen bar! Near Carnival Cruise's port of call — Puerta Maya. Guests can enter this underwater lounge and breathe enriched, scented oxygen while shooting bubble guns, playing Jenga, writing messages to each other and guests on the outside, and having their photo taken in our underwater photo booth– complete with a unique digital wall background and entertaining props. The fun lasts approximately 30 minutes including a short briefing. No diving experience necessary! If you can walk and breathe and are 8+ then you can participate. Be prepared for lots of people stopping to watch and take your photo too.

Chocolate Factory Tour

Follow the signs to the taxi terminal and hail a ten-minute ride to Kaokao Factory from the pier. Make your own Mayan Chocolate from scratch! Discover the bean to bar chocolate making process inside this little great chocolate factory in Cozumel. All along the tour you will try the different flavors of the Cacao during its process (Rosted cacao beans, cacao paste and our product line) and the Mayan drink made with the original ingredients.

Each intimate 90-minute tour starts on the hour (09:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m.) and costs $25 US dollars per person. Since they are a small factory, space is limited, which is why they request online reservations with pre-payment. Regardless if you have a tour booked, you can still visit their Factory Store for chocolate souvenirs.

Get a Baloon Hat at Senior Frogs

Cheesy, a tourist trap, whatever you want to call it, it's fun. We sat at the bar and drank a very large daiquiri in a souvenir cup, and enjoyed watching the different ways the staff entertained everyone like by balancing beer on their heads. They also played a name that theme song game and I answered the very first song, which was Sex and the City lol. I thought I was just going to get bragging rights, but instead, they had me come up on the stage and take a free shot too.

We requested one of the balloon hats for each of us and we weren't the only ones walking back on board with these silly hats. It's free, just tip the balloon maker.

It's not cheap, but groups of all ages seem to congregate here and it's a fun time.

Find Your Own Last Minute Tour

The minute you get off the pier you will be bombarded by "Free Information" booths and people with flyers offering tours to beaches, snorkeling and to different hotels on the island. These are typically cheaper than the cruise offerings, but of course not protected by or affiliated with the cruise. This can be a risk, but in Panama and Cancun, we did one of these without incident.

In the Dominican Republic, we simply went up to one of the taxi drivers and asked how much for 5 five hours exclusively and he then took us to different Rum, Chocolate, Cigar and beach spots privately for only $100 and with four of us in the van. For cigar enthusiasts, this can be a great opportunity to explore local tobacco selections or even bring along luxurious Renegade cigars to enjoy a premium smoke while taking in the scenery.

Ride Over to San Francisco Beach

Playa San Francisco is known for its clear, calm waters featuring boat & jet ski rentals and seaside cafes & pubs.

Beaches on the eastern side of the island are rocky, and the water is often rough, but they’re beautiful and feel much more undiscovered than others on the island. Northern coast beaches, north of San Miguel, tend to be popular with families with kids, since the water is calm and shallow. Limestone “iron shore” beaches are top spots to go snorkeling -- just make sure to wear water shoes.

All of the beaches on Cozumel are public, but that doesn’t mean they’re free. Technically, the use of the actual beach is free, but many impose cover charges that apply toward your bar or beach club food tab.

Tips for Cruising on Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas

The 4,560-passenger Independence of the Seas from Royal Caribbean Cruise Line is an impressive ship with LOTS to do and experience. Here are some tips and highlights to consider for your sail.

Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas VIP Cruise Tips

Consult the Interactive Map

By the last day, I always know my way around a cruise ship. Fortunately, instead of having the standard map signs, the Independence of the Seas has interactive touch screen maps near the elevators. You can select a particular venue or even enter a stateroom number and a of steps on how to get there will appear. Genius!

Ask Your Steward for a Robe

Robes aren't automatically in your cabin, but you can request a terry cloth RCCL robe from your steward for the duration of your sail. Loved wearing it out on our balcony.

Don't Miss the Evening Piano Show at the Schooner Bar

After our 8 p.m. dinner, we headed to the Piano Bar where we cozied up right by the gleaming grand piano and sang along to favorite tunes. More talented guests (I can't sing), would also come and join the host for a duet providing for even more fun. We had so much fun that we ended up staying till 1:30 a.m. There were two different pianists/performers, and I wish I remembered his name, but the silly one with props and curly hair above was my favorite.

Bungee Fun on Sky Pad

Strap in, put on your virtual reality headset and soar high into the sky for gravity-defying fun at Sky Pad℠ - a bungee trampoline experience that brings it a step further with VR. Whether you’re smashing candies in a sugar-coated world or traveling light years into the future — this brand-new bungee trampoline experience opens up a whole new universe of possibility.

Have a Water Slide Race & Go Surfing

These water slides aren't just for kids. Race a friend or significant other and plunge down the blue or yellow tunnels on THE PERFECT STORM℠ dual racer slides Typhoon and Cyclone.

While fun to watch, I didn't brave the FLOW RIDER surfing stimulator, especially after seeing some of the wipeouts. I just don't have the skills, lol.

Snag Tickets for the Ice Show at Sea

Held in the Studio B rink, the ice-skating shows -- which rotate between Freeze Frame and Strings -- can't be missed. Tickets are first come, first served, you should get them early. Royal Caribbean's daily newsletter will inform you when tickets can be picked up on your cruise.

Although, we were able to catch an afternoon show on the last at-sea day without a ticket and there were still extra seats available. I couldn't get over the fact that there was an ice rink there on board. Unfortunately, two of the performers fell, but they are on a moving ship after all.

Attend the Champagne Art Auction

On the first at-sea day there is a Champagne Art Auction with free flutes of champagne and other chances to win more goodies like free art, books and even a bottle of champagne. You don't have to be a serious art collector to enjoy this lively and educational experience. I managed to control myself this time, however, I have bought before from the Park West gallery.

Another way to score some free Champers is on the first formal night in the promenade on Deck 5 during the captain's dinner, waiters will be passing out flutes of bubbly. I may or may not have drunk two ;)

Bring Your Own Wine Onboard

You can bring personal wine onboard on boarding day only, limited to two (2) 750 ml bottles per stateroom, not per person. No beer or hard liquor allowed though. Do not put the wine in your checked luggage or it will be confiscated though. Instead, have it in your carry on. I actually was able to bring in two bottles of Champagne and a mini bottle of Prosecco without any problem. However, when we stopped in Cozumel and I purchased some Tequila as gifts, they were flagged and taken when we re-boarded the ship, and returned to us the evening of our last day to put in our luggage. The same goes for on-board Duty-Free liquor purchases. Also, open your personal bottles in your room and not in public areas, otherwise you will incur a $15 corkage fee per bottle.

How to Always Remember What Day it is

Simply check the elevator floor. Yup. Each day they switch out a piece of the elevator carpet to read the current day. Be the first to point it out to your friends ;) I kept wanting to go to the elevator banks at Midnight to see this happen, lol.

Go Here to Escape the Pool Crowds

The main pool and adult pool is packed on at Sea Days since that is where most of the activities happen and where TV screen is. To escape the crowds, head to Deck 12 aft. Below the FlowRider surf simulator, there's an unfrequented deck space with lounge chairs overlooking the back of the ship.

Shop Along the Promenade

Deck 5 is like the Times Square for this ship with bars, specialty dining, music, the complimentary Sorrento's pizza place, Ben & Jerry's ice cream parlor, Sugar Rush candy store and shops from Duty-Free, Michael Kors, a jewelry store and more. I splurged on this Valentino Handbag and a pair of shorts. It's tax-free at least. This strip is quite stunning and jaw-dropping as I felt like I was in a floating mall.

Splurge for a Balcony Cabin

It's so worth it. Really. I loved waking up each morning and breathing in the salty air. I didn't have to worry about second-hand smoke here either so opted to read and sunbathe on my private ocean view balcony instead.

Pack a Badge Holder & Towel Clips

Once you set sail there isn’t any need for a wallet or purse since all purchases can be made with your Sea Pass, which is also your room key. Thus, it’s important not to lose it, which is why you’ll see many passengers wearing theirs around their neck with a lanyard. The cruise line doesn’t provide the lanyard, but Passenger Services desk will gladly punch a hole in your card for you to attach to your string. You can always buy one in the gift shop on board or from one of the merchants at the boarding port, but I prefer to get mine ahead of time and one that matches my style ;) like this rose gold one.

Also, while towels are provided by the pools and sun decks, you are on a ship and it gets windy, so be prepared to have your towel keep slipping, falling for flying away unless you have towel clips. I was surprised by how many guests came with their own from flamingos to margarita designed ones and I was quite envious. Next time.

Oh, and the two power plugs were not enough for my gadgets, which is why I brought in a Cruise Power Strip with USB Outlets and extra plugs. This particular one includes Non-Surge Protection & Ship Approved. I take it on all my cruises.

Overall Thoughts on Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas

I have sailed over 20 times on various cruise lines and it’s hard not to compare and contrast. Below is what I liked and didn’t like in comparison to other ships.

What I liked...

  • It's definitely an impressive ship.
  • Internet was by far the most reliable and fastest service at sea that I’ve experienced on Disney and Princess. Reasonably priced packages too.
  • Dining Rooms were modernly furnished and quite contemporary, even the buffet had an upscale feel to its design.
  • Quality of food included in your sail price was excellent.
  • Variety of water slides, surf simulator and splash area.
  • An ice show at sea? Come on, that’s pretty spectacular. They also have Grease the musical.
  • The fitness center is quite large and thankfully offers an amazing unobstructed view of the ocean with treadmills and elliptical machines facing out toward the windows. If that’s not motivation right there, I don’t know what is.
  • The royal promenade of shops and restaurants on deck five with high ceilings gives guests the feeling as if they are on a floating mall. It’s quite impressive and exciting.

What I didn’t like...

  • The amount of secondhand smoke. I expect to smell smoke in the casino or designated smoking rooms, but there were many smoking areas up on deck that made lying out or just walking by the pools quite unpleasant.
  • The beds/mattresses were stiff and not as comfortable as Princess Cruises.
  • I felt there was a constant upcharge for most services where guests were nickel and dimed, definitely not an all-included offering like with other ships. Yes, specialty dining fees are expected, but it went beyond that.
  • The price for drinks and cocktails weren’t as reasonable as other lines.
  • Only one movie channel – that rotates two programs each day. I know, you’re not supposed to spend time in your cabin, but I’ve always enjoyed getting caught up on new releases while away in the downtimes.
