I've been wanting hard-sided luggage for some time because they are known for being more durable and lighter. Though not completely water resistant, hard shell luggage is much easier to keep dry in rain, snow, or puddles too, and it provides better protection against general spills and accidents. The same is true for keeping the luggage clean in general. This is a huge perk especially since no matter how much care I took with my previous fabric luggage (see below) it quickly was riddled with black streaks after being forced to check it in at the gate.
